Job Description:

The UMMA Center in Waukegan, IL is searching for a Part-Time Coordinator-Instructor to administer its General Educational Development (GED) preparation class as part of the Education Empowerment Program. This position will be primarily responsible for classroom instruction of students on weekday evenings and preparation of associated course materials. The position will also be responsible for all facets of planning, development, and on-going support of the GED program including ongoing curriculum development as well as providing direct student guidance throughout the class and through GED exam registration and completion thereafter. We are looking for a talented, dedicated, and enthusiastic instructor to join the team at our Waukegan center. The ideal candidate has experience teaching in an
alternative educational setting. The individual will report to the Education Empowerment Program’s Chairperson(s). Spanish Speaking skills are a plus, but not required.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare lesson plans/course materials in accordance with course syllabi for all five GED exam subjects: EnglishWriting and Comprehension, Literature, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics.
  • Instruct and evaluate students in all GED subject areas.
  • Track student attendance, grades, and progress
  • Monitor all students’ registration and completion of the GED exam
  • Provide counseling and academic guidance to students as needed.
  • Introduce and effectively use technology in classes.
  • Assist the center with attrition control.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • One (1) year experience teaching in a secondary, community college, ABE/GED, or alternative educational setting.
  • Bachelors degree or higher

Desired Qualifications:

  • Teacher certification
  • Two (2) years experience teaching in a secondary, community college, ABE/GED, or alternative educational setting.
