Summer 2011: Volunteer Basic Needs Summer Intern
The UMMA Center, a 501(c)(3) grassroots non-profit organization, seeks a Volunteer Basic Needs Summer Intern to work on expanding and improving our Basic Needs Program. UMMA Center’s Basic Needs program focuses on providing the basic essentials such as food and clothes for the underserved members of our community, empowering them to try and lead better lives.
Primary responsibilities will involve planning and implementing processes and programs that improve the distribution of the food pantry. Developing a strategy for better capturing information from our clients. Coordinating clothing drives and back to school supplies programs over the summer. This is a part time volunteer position consisting of 20 hours/week. An engaging and energetic personality is essential. An interest in social service and social justice is encouraged.
This internship offers applicants the opportunity to take real responsibility and help grow a critical program for an established non-profit. This is a great opportunity for a college student looking to enter the fast growing field of Nonprofit Management, or work in grassroots causes.
Essential Job Functions:
- Developing and documenting an improved process for the Food Pantry
- Working closely with the Board and Staff to develop a 3 year strategy for the Basic Need Program
- Organize and Coordinate Basic Needs community drives
- Implement short term enhancements to the Food Pantry and Clothing Distribution program
- Conducting surveys and research to determine the current and future needs of our community
Requirements and Details:
- Availability to begin work starting in June 2011. The internship is for 20 hours/week and will be 10-12 weeks in length. Interns must be present at UMMA’s office in Downtown Waukegan.
- Genuine interest in the Nonprofit Sector
- Basic understanding of organization’s mission and activities (after accepting the position)
- Nonprofit experience (valued but not required)
- This position requires a person with creativity and an open mind
